The Modern Pictorialism of D. J. Ruzicka

Moderní piktorialismus D. J. Růžičky

The most prominent amateur photographers in the United States have been working on pictorialism in the first half of the 20th century - they strived for artistic expression using beautiful, perfectly crafted pictures. Drahomír Josef Růžička, physician from Manhattan had a prominent standing among the pictorialists who became famous after the First World War. He was the founding member of groups such as Pictorial Photographers of America and Pittsburgh Salon and he inspired the club life in the whole country. His favourite subject was New York. Since 1921 he regularly visited his home in Czechoslovakia, where his approach to photography was considered revolutionary and instigated an avant-garde movement.
