Tears and Laughter

Dutch "historic" painting

The third of a publications focused on Dutch art from 16th to 19th century in the regions of Holland, Fanders and later Belgium, enters the field of religion and moralizing satire. It's about the artistic depictions of "history" of the time of both old and new testament, showing the Mother of God shedding tears as the Saviour sacrifices himself for the sinful mankind. In the moralizing context the Dutch satire follows Hieronymus Bosch as well as Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It touches on human sins, including those of the church. The book rich with accompanying pictures focuses on art from secular, church and restituted artistocratic collections found not only on castles and chateaux, today spread even to regional or central institutions, especially the National Gallery.
