Publikace Tvář průmyslové doby. Poldi – lidé a jejich továrna představuje výběr z fotografických archivů Poldiny huti v Kladně. Bohatý obrazový materiál zahrnuje časový úsek přibližně od konce 19. století do období znárodnění po druhé světové válce, část pak posledních 30 let 20. století. Ilustruje stoletou historii významného průmyslového podniku a industriální doby a zároveň společenské uplatnění klasické černobílé fotografie v tomto období.
Fotografické archivy Poldiny huti obsahují přibližně 10 000 negativů, většinou skleněných desek, později negativů na plastové podložce. Fotografie dokumentují všechny aspekty rozvoje a činnosti podniku – záběry provozů a výrobků včetně rozsáhlé technické dokumentace, zahraničních zastoupení a skladů. Ukazují však i společenské zákulisí výroby a fotografické portréty zaměstnanců. Za pozornost stojí i svébytný fotografický pohled a estetická kvalita fotografií.
Publikace je příležitostí nahlédnout do unikátního obrazového svědectví archivů Poldiny huti, které má v tomto rozsahu vysokou dokumentární hodnotu z hlediska historie průmyslové výroby a společenských změn, ale ukazuje i možnosti, jaké nám dnes dává odborná kurátorská a restaurátorská práce s archivem historického fotografického materiálu.

This book, Tvář průmyslové doby. Poldi – lidé a jejich továrna [The Face of Industrial Era. Poldi: The People and Their Factory], presents a selection from photo archives of Poldi steelworks in Kladno. Photographs selected for this publication capture a period spanning from late nineteenth century until nationalisation after the Second World War, with a smaller part of images depicting the last three decades of the twentieth century. In this way, readers can visualise the century of history of an important steel mill and the industrial era and appreciate the social importance of traditional, black-and-white photography.
Photo archives of Poldi steelworks hold about 10,000 negatives, for the most part glass plates, later negatives on a plastic medium. These images document all aspects of this steelworks’ development and activities: from views of halls and products, including extensive technical documentation, all the way to international representation and for instance storage facilities. Aside from that, they also capture the social background of production and lives of Poldi’s employees. Worth noting is also the distinct photographic signature and aesthetic value of many of these photographs.
This book offers an opportunity to explore the unique visual testimony of Poldi’s archives. Moreover, thanks to the extent of material presented, this collection of photographs has a high documentary value. It follows the history of industrial production and social changes and demonstrates how outstanding curation and advanced restoration can tap into the potential of archival collection of photographic material.
